James Bender, in his book How to Talk Well (published in 1994 by McGraw-Hill Book Company Inc.) relates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn.

Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon.
One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and
learned something interesting about how he grew it.
The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours.
'How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours
when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?' the reporter asked.
‘Why sir,' said the farmer, 'didn't you know?
The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and
swirls it from field to field.
If my neighbours grow inferior corn,
cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn.
If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn.
' He is very much aware of the connectedness of life.
His corn cannot improve unless his neighbour's corn also improves.

So it is in other dimensions of our lives.
Those who choose to be at peace,
must help their neighbours to be at peace.
Those who choose to live well must help others to live well,
for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches.
And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness,
for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.
The lesson for each of us is this . . .

the accreditation details are comfirm.
Please take note that yuping ma'am will
be coming down to teach finish the syllabus
at 8:30 sharp! So do fall in by then in your full-u.

Anyone is welcome to come early to practise

Remember to have a full breakfast beforehand
as there will be no snacks break from 8:30 till 12 noon.
However, sufficient water breaks will be given.
So, remember to makan alright?

Do revise your sizing command well especially,
the english parts, malay parts, and even the timing.

Mistakes made today was that, some assumed that
when we belok while marching, it is on a certain feet.
However, there is no certain feet to execute this command.

Also, when marching do take note that your hands are 90-45!
Lock your arms, lookup, look smart. Don't forget, not to drag your
footwear!

Badge ceremony

we are please to say that we have a new teacher joining us!
You can address her as "Miss Tan". She is a previous red
cross member as well and she would be helping out with us.
Miss Tan would most probably be coming down for training
this friday, and do give a her a warm welcome to the red cross
family. Also, there will be a badge ceremony. Those that have
earned badges in the past few months will be given their badges.
There will not be a need for full-u. It will be a short and simple
thing so that we can reward those who has receive badges.

I promised to update the blog and here it is!
Congrats on those cadets who have passed
footdrill bronze today. I am proud that you
all of you have put in effort today. I manage
to see improvements in most of your.
However, those that has failed, it does not
mean you should give up or that your footdrills
is bad. You just need more practice.
As the saying goes " Practise makes perfect"
I hope as a unit, you all can help one another
to pass the accreditations k?

Common mistakes in the theory paper are:
1. common mistakes (horse-kicking, arms swinging, clouching, heels not close, fist not clenched)
2. tutup not tutop
3. Hands should be right over left
4. Heel to heel is 30cm apart, toe to toe is 50cm apart
5. Answer all the questions! (Some of your left it blank)
Highest for thoery is: Yanling

Details on silver training remains the same as on the previous posts!

However, there are changes on silver accreditation!

With a common goal, you all can achieve greater heights!
Things to note is that you must be sure of the malay
commands and english commands. The timing as well

well for most of the lower secondary cadets.
It is a meaningful event though it may be tough!

Here is your packing list: (A small bag to contain everything is advised)

here are the following details to take note of.

Report to HQ: By 5pm sharp (Your are excused to leave training early)
Your will be going down together with Miss Lim and Yu Ping Ma'am.

Do remember to bring your clothes and if possible, try to bring a cultural game
too. However, if you have no cultural game, any game will do.
It is to play with the Australians.

Please seek you seniors if you have anything you are unsure about.

There is training tomorrow and Yu Ping Ma'am will be coming down.

Hello my dearies!

The long weekend has arrived, what do you look forward for?
Apparently, school teachers has dumped us with workloads
and online quizzes. But nevertheless, let's look on the bright side!

It's Singapore 45th birthday, and a great four days holiday for us.
Well take this opportunity to have a good rest and great job to
everyone on friday's school ndp. Though more improvement
could be made, we take this as a learning point and improve
our footdrills. Is that okay? Just to note, an upcoming footdrill
accreditaion bronze for secondary 1 and 2 is coming up.

Helllooooo HSRCY!

Well tomorrow's the day! We are finally getting promoted XD But please, before you rejoice, do think back at the past year.

Do you think that you have given your best?

Do you think that you deserve your new rank?

How do you think that you can improve and change?

Here's a little message for all of you.

To the secondary ones,

You have done well in adapting in RCY. That's a good thing but please do note that DISCIPLINE is also very important here. Are you coming to trainings and meetings regularly? Do you greet the seniors? Do you sit like a Gold unit? Do you have a sense of urgency? To quote your Winnie M'am, "do you check your bearings?"

But most importantly, do you respect and look out for your fellow squad mates?

Unity is strength my dear juniors. RCY may seem tough at first but the rewards of persevering is worth it. We have been through if I can say, far worse than what you have and if we can survive and emerge victorious against past fears, why can't you?

To the secondary twos,

Not bad... It is a joy to see the secondary twos growing as a batch and bonding;) with the other schools. You were the batch who experienced the motivational times of JY M'am and the sec 4s and I apologise if the past two months under our leadership did not quite inspire you the way the sec 4s did. But brace yourself! We're pulling our socks up :) I believe CAC was quite a blow to you guys. It was to all of us too but it's okay. Just LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.

Take responsibility for your actions. Don't do last minute work. Be serious. Be respectful. You know you're improving not only for our unit, your seniors or the YOs. You're growing for yourself! Take note of that. You're getting your new ranks tomorrow. Don't make the same mistakes Corporals-to-be. It'll be your turn to lead soon.

To the secondary threes,

Hey batchies. The past two months have been turbulent. Proposals planned and edited repeatedly, never-ending. Late night online meetings. Deadlines. Camp. Trainings. Badges. Accreds. Bottles & Labelling

For safety precaution wise, we have decided not to use coke bottles

anymore as it is quite unhealthy. We now welcome any types of

bottles to be used during training. The criteria for the bottles is that

it must be at least a 500ml bottle to contain sufficient water.

Do note that the bottle is to contain water only and not

other drinks during trainings, unless with special reasons.

The above picture is the label everyone must have on their bottles.

You can see the personal details, e.g Name, School.

Do note that for the school, please put HSRCY (Your Class)

Also, please waterproof the label with scotchtape or book wrap.

This is to be done by 30th JULY training.

Kindly inform your other squadmates regarding the changes.

this friday's training, 21st May 2010,
is changed into a meeting.
Fall in and reporting of attendance still continues at 1:15pm,
but there's not a need for coke bottle nor pinning up of fringes.
Do note that you DO NOT have to wear mufti,
uniform or pe attire will do just fine.
Please remember that although this is not a training,
Discipline is still expected.

We will be doing camp briefings, as well as camp surveys and
group interactions. Do bring along your writting materials.

Hey Guys! :D
The long and tired trainings for the passing out parade is over.
I guess during that period of time, we learnt to master the basic footdrills and as NCOs we are proud of everyone for their effort.
We will miss our Secondary 4 seniors definaltly but we wish them
the best of Luck for their O-levels or N-Levels.
The passing out parade was smooth and great that there was no casualty despite the very bad weather. Thumbs up for everybody!
The performances put up from the cadets was an enjoyment for the Secondary 4(s) as you see the smile on their faces.

Well, the examinations are here, lets put in our very best.

Red Cross Arts Festival has come to an happy ending. Cadets who have taken part have seen what other schools did and pick up many pointers for our next year Arts Festival.

Although our dance did not make in to the semi-finals. We would like to applaud those people in dance for all their hardwork and commitment in the march holidays.

We would like to congrats the song categary people for making it to the semi-finals and earning a 2nd Runner up trophy. We are third in Singapore and am sure our mentors are very proud of us.

Once again, a standing ovation to all people who had taken part in Arts Festival

and made it a memorable one for HSRCY.

Our achievement again!,

It was a fulfilling and meaningful one.
We learnt various aspect of what a leader should hold,
and what is expected in a proposal.
We aquired the ways on how a Passing Out Parade should run.
and planning of various activities such a lessons, camps etc.
But nevertheless,
We learnt, we grow,
we had closer bonds as we played the games
and get to know each other better.

An appreciation of thanks to
MS LIM for coming down to help in the camp,
YUPING MA'AM for coaching and imparting skills to us,
RYAN SIR for coming down everyday to liven up the atmosphere,

The names mentioned above, please take note that you are to buy the materials and start designing ASAP. Remember to keep the receipts to claim from YOs. By next Tuesday(5/1/10),all designs are to be brought to school and submitted. As mentioned before, remember that while designing, the Red Cross emblem is to be on a white background, made up of 5 equal red squares,etc. The budget for this orientation is less than $40 for everything, so please buy the things within the budget.

P.S. Cassandra and Zoe, you guys are to buy the hotdogs and sufficienttoothpicks and claim the money later from the YOs. Do cut the the hotdogs up on the day BEFORE 7th January to ensure effiency during the orientation.

Hi ALL!

We are going to have a CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION!! It's after the 22nd training so training on that day will end at 2.30pm. We will have a small gift exchange so do prepare a gift of less than $5. Refreshments will be provided. So do come for 22nd training!

Just as a reminder, anyone who has not attended any training will be required to present a letter of excuse,except for those who need to go for HQ events(eg. RCYC). If the letter is not submitted, your absence will be counted as truancy. Thank you.

Dear Red Cross Cadets,

It's been so long since the last training right? How're your holidays? Haha! Just a gentle reminder here, there would be training on the 17th and 22th of December from 0800hr - 1200hr. Do remember to bring along your evacuation notes for 22th December's training. Rules still apply even for trainings during the holiday, no dyed hairs, no painted nails etc... Remember to fall in 15min before actual time and remember to wear spectacle hooks for those wearing spectacles. Do spread this message around, I do not want to see poor attendance rate for the upcoming trainings.

On top of that, I would also like to inform you guys that there would be a 1-Day Evacuation camp on 29th December from 0800hr-1600hr. Evacuation Bronze Accreditation would also be included inside the camp. Do revise your notes and clear your doubts either during trainings or even on the actual day itself as we would be revising with all of you the Evac Bronze Syllabus. It is compulsory for all cadets to attend and there should be no failures as you would be given a chance to retake the component(s) you failed. Do keep yourself free on that day, stay tuned to the blog for further updates.

Just something worth sharing to be announced here. I'm proud to announce that our unit has managed to claim the 3rd place in North District for First Aid Competition 2009! This achievement has once again proved that HSRCY has got the ability of achieving more! Success is dependent on effort, after weeks of trainings, our hardwork has finally paid off. Million thanks to Miss Vani and Miss Lim for all your guidance even though you teachers are very busy people! And also, RYAN! *Those wearing spectacles are to wear spectacle hooks.

Dear all , congrats of your promotion!(: With a higher rank it definately meant
higher responsibilty.I hope all of you will put it greater effort to make this
a better home (: Well , in this post i shall talk about how redcross impacted
my life .

3years ago i joined hsrcy , the reason was simple. HSRCY gave me a feeling that i can
slack my while through and ace my cca point.Things were different ever since i
truely commit myself into this unit. Xiaoli ma'am was the chair and yuping ma'am
was the vice chair , training were really tough then .But with the bond i had with
my batchmates , all of us decided to hang on .1year went by in a blink of eyes ,
we really had went thru alot together.Those tough times whereby we would go home
and suffer from body ache , those happy times where we would seat together
and discuss about redcross.I still remember at that time i'm a super quiet person
, i dunno much but i know i do love redcross alot.

When i'm in sec2 i'm very fortunate to pass thru the syf selection and get into the
marching contigent. I would say , thats really a once in a life time experience.
Its a very meaningful process , being able to gather with a group of redcross fans
and make redcross proud in the parade.

Here i'm being the nco of hsrcy , to me redcross is no longer a cca. Its a time where
a big family get together to improve ourselves in order to make this world
a better place.I can never say enough to thank all my seniors , the yos , the vis
for the countless opportunity.All i know is i'm gonna continue striving and make
hsrcy a true double gold unit! Not only me , but with my fellow sec3s we would
make hsrcy proud.

Looking back , alot of people asked me " hey why waste sat to go for trainings ,
let's go for movies" But i'm sure all of you we had really place in commitment
will know why. The reason is simple , because we love this unit , this unit has
became more than cca. It is a passion that we share and you will only uds it
if you are in it.

Fellow redcrosser , so let's do our very best for this unit alright? This unit had
gave us amper opportunity , we have so much so let's give back! Rank does not give you
respect , respect is earned thru commitments.

Rehearsal for Promotion Ceremony
Date: 4th September

Attire: School uniform

For those of you who are still unaware, this Saturday is going to be our Promotion Ceremony! You will need to be in Full Uniform, do present yourselves in tip-top condition! This friday's rehearsal is compulsory, do remind as many squadmates as you can, it would be better if everyone knows the parade procedure well. (:

On top of that, to celebrate our promotion to a new rank, we are going to have an outing cum hike cum pinic at Mount Faber! I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but think about it, won't it be interesting and fun-filling? We should always tell ourselves that we deserve this rank, we ought to challenge oneself to achieve! I believe if all of us conquer the hike, we would definitely feel a great sense of achievement on that day! Let's all conquer the hike as a family, as one HSRCY! Challenge ourselves and go for it and then tell others, WE DID IT! On that day, you could bring your own snacks or whatever crackers or drinks that you can consume after the hike. We would set off as a unit after promotion ceremony(: Really hope you guys would be able to go. (:

share a short inspirational post. I hope it does motivate some of you yeah?(:

In this world , there is only 2 type of people , they are the learners and non learners.
Learners and non learners are known as failures and winners to some.
Some qualities of learners is that whenever they fall they say " hey , this is tough but
i am enjoying the challenge. "Then they will go on trying and challenge the impossible.
To them , every possible now was an impossible .On the other hand , for non learners
they are afraid of falling . So they will stay at there comfort zones , doing things
that they are good at. As times pass by they will realise they have not learn anything
new.

Life is a journey , and the destination does not matters AT ALL. What truely matters
is , have you learn anything? What's the point of doing something
which you are so good at over and over again. Challenge yourselves daily , make
everyday a meaningful one (: So redcrossers , i want those that are already alright
in one skill , move on to the other. You never know who you really are , if you
don't even bother to try. With effort , everything is possible. Which baby learn
to walk the day he is born? One's success is not determined by what you like ,
or what you are good at , but by continueous effort to improve urselves(:
